Deer Park-Silverton Firefighters Donate School Supplies to Olivet Baptist Church

What Our Members Donated for the Back 2 School Bash 

Crews from across the district pitched in. Members brought in notebooks and pencils, backpacks and folders, and the everyday classroom supplies that add up fast for a family with more than one student in school. The donation went straight to Olivet Baptist Church, where volunteers hand supplies directly to the students and families who come to the Bash. 

The Back 2 School Bash is an annual event, and the church has built it into something families count on. Our members were glad to add to the pile. 

Why Fire and EMS Crews Support Local Back to School Events 

We respond to more than 3,700 calls for service each year in Deer Park, Silverton, Golf Manor, and Columbia Township. Those calls take us into homes, schools, and businesses throughout the district, and they give us a clear view of what our neighbors are dealing with. 

School supplies are a real expense. A single backpack filled with the items on a classroom list can cost a family more than they planned for, and the cost multiplies with each child. When a local church organizes an event that removes that pressure for a few hundred families, showing up with a donation is an easy decision. 

Serving the Community Between Emergency Calls 

Our job description starts with fire suppression and emergency medical response. It doesn't end there. The district teaches fire safety in classrooms and at community events throughout the year. We inspect schools, businesses, foster homes, and places of assembly for life safety hazards.  

We visit homes at the request of residents and point out changes that make those homes safer. We introduce young people to careers in the fire service, and some of them come back years later as firefighters and paramedics. 

A school supply drive fits the same purpose. We are neighbors here, and the strength of these communities shows up in every call we run.

Fire Safety Reminders for the New School Year 

The start of the school year is a good time to review a few basics with your family. 

Practice your home escape plan and pick a meeting place outside where everyone gathers. Make sure your children know your street address and can give it to a dispatcher. Test your smoke alarms and replace the batteries if you have not done it recently. Walk or drive your child's route to school and talk through crossing streets safely and watching for buses. 

If your child has a medical condition that a crew should know about in an emergency, tell the school office and keep that information current.
